DepEd Quezon City and the Department of Agriculture (DA) formally forged a partnership to strengthen the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) being implemented in the 96 public elementary schools in the City through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on September 16, 2020 at the Agriculture Training Institute (ATI), Elliptical Road, Quezon City. The GPP also aims to augment food supplies in this time of pandemic due to COVID-19.
The MOA was signed by Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Jenilyn Rose B. Corpuz and Director Alfredo S. Aton of the DA – ATI, and witnessed by DepEd and DA– ATI officials and school principals To fully implement the program this school year, a school head has been identified to take the lead in each of the six Congressional Districts. They are Jocelyn Agbuya Lopez, Bago Bantay ES; Silverio Estorco, San Diego ES; Robin Ramos, Kalantiaw ES; Alice Masubay, Betty Go Belmonte ES; July Villapa, Nortth Fairview ES and Reymund Valdez, Andres Bonifacio Memorial ES.
Meanwhile, according to Dr. Roger S. Tamondong, Supervisor-in–Charge of Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP), the Dept. of Agriculture – Region IV- A and the Joy of Urban Farming has been partnering with DepEd Quezon City since 2011 when the National Greening Program was launched on September 5, 2011 at Sto. Cristo Elementary School. Bro. Armin Luistro, Director Briagas of the DA – ATI, and Hon. Vice Mayor Josefina “Joy” Belmonte, founder of JOY OF URBAN FARMING took the lead in the launching, which was witnessed by then SDS Dr. Corazon C. Rubio and all public secondary and elementary school principals of Quezon City.
Dr. Wilma C. Manio, then principal of Sto Cristo ES piloted the program and earned the title as the Division’s Best Gulayan sa Paaralan implementer for three consecutive years and even landed 2nd in the Regional Level. Holy Spirit Elementary School repeated the same feat in the succeeding years. From school years 2012 – 2016, the DA – Region IV – A continued to sponsor the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program being implemented in public schools by training EPP / TLE teachers, aside from providing seeds and seedlings garden tools. The JOY of Urban Farming also put up nurseries in almost all elementary schools for plant propagation to strengthen the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program.
